Who was Jean-Léon Gérôme?
Gérôme was one of the most brilliant academic painters.
He was a professor at École des Beaux-Arts and was famous for the severity of his criticism of his students. However, he also offered them assistance outside the classroom, often inviting them into his studio and encouraging them to study thoroughly.
Following a visit to Egypt, Gérôme was to paint a series of pictures in which oriental decor is combined with depictions of female nudity Slave auction is one of them.
One of the paintings in this series – Slave Market – was used as a campaign poster for the 2019 European Parliament elections by the right-wing populist German party.
He was fascinated by the technical virtuosity and extremely hostile to impressionist painters
The last 25 years of his career he devoted to sculpture.
