Three years after exhibiting his painting Diogenes, Gérôme was appointed professor at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Here he was to teach many students from France and other countries around the world
After several trips to the Middle East, the artist produced several paintings highlighting Arab and Muslim cultures. Some critics felt that these works were indulging in cultural and social stereotypes. However, the paintings in this series are extremely valuable and appreciated today.
He personified Truth in art in the form of a naked woman who is either thrown into an empty fountain, or stands at the bottom of it or emerges from it. Some art critics believe that these paintings reflect Gérôme’s violent and malicious criticism of the Impressionists.
He died at the age of 79. He was found breathless in front of a Rembrandt painting and next to one of his own paintings depicting Truth.
